OK, I admit it! I have a love-hate relationship with discussion forums, especially ones that I have created.
Why do I love them?
They are GREAT ways to create content, large numbers of pages and market yourself to large numbers of people. It is the true social marketing strategy.
Why do I hate them?
They are a lot of work to manage! Setting them up is trivial and can be done in a matter of minutes (I will explain in a second!). Managing and moderating a forum can be a full time job (but a very lucrative one, too). Personally, having my own forum is just not for me. I had one for about a year here at TheWebReviewer, but it grew too much and took up too much of my time (and I just got lazy and let it slide).
Now don't let my personal goals stop you from creating your own discussion forum.
And if you are going to do it, you might as well use the one that MOST discussion forums are based on: phpBB
Like Wordpress, this is a FREE installation. And let me tell you, this is VERY POWERFUL, too. Your forum WILL look like other professional ones with all of the same features, bells and whistles that they all have (that includes functions for posting, emails, replying, creating accounts, grouping users, monitoring users, blocking users, promoting users, emoticons...everything!).
And this can be installed into a sub-directory (like I do here at http://www.thewebreviewer.com/forum).
Like with a Wordpress Blog, if you currently have your site hosted on HostGator, you can install phpBB with a simple few clicks using their Fantastico Delux script. It works the same way, you just choose the phpBB option on the left column (and you will be given the option to create this in a sub-directory, such as "/forum" if you like).
