Detailed eLance Review
Elance is perhaps the most well-known outsourcing and freelancing
companies on the internet. In fact, they were the first company I ever
used to start outsourcing work.
(For that example, I was outsourcing article writing).
That
was several years ago and to this day, I still go back to eLance as my
best "second source" solution to try to find qualified applicants to
outsource my tasks.
First, the eLance system is simple to use
and if you are looking to use it to find a freelancer, it does not cost
you any money. (If you are a freelancer yourself, they do take a small
percentage of your earnings for the service).
For the PROS:
I
have found that eLance has one of the biggest networks around. You
will find providers from all over the world and the price ranges for
tasks can be dirty cheap to professionally expensive. Over time, I
have used them about 7 times and even found a full-time writer through
this service. I have gotten tasks like articles, eBook writing and
editing, logos, graphic design and some web design consulting through
eLance. Also, eLance goes well beyond just internet marketing tasks.
The process is very simple and you are not obligated to choose anyone,
either.
CONS:
Again, like any outsourcing, using
eLance is very hit-and-miss. Like most services, you can pre-interview
candidates before you select them, but initial insight is limiting
(compared to something like Odesk). You do get past ratings and lifetime earnings, but you don't get much assessment of their skills.
Also,
I wish that Odesk had a better project management system. They do have
a communication system of emailing (which you should ALWAYS use, just
in case of a dispute), but there is no formal time logging and screen
shots like you would find at Odesk. Of course, if you are a provider,
you may prefer the lack of "big brother" looking over your shoulder at
all times.
Despite these facts, I would not ignore eLance! These days, I will usually look for someone to hire in eLance and one other outsourcing company.
It can't hurt and the more candidates and selection that you have, the
better! And you will probably find you will get the most response from
eLance, too!
