"It will never happen to me"

Yes, I\'ve been there before.  About 5 years ago.  My arguments were that hard drives rarely fail and secondly, I didn\'t think there was really any files that I couldn\'t replace if I had to.

Then the "Big Crash" happened.

In this case it was the blue screen of death appearing on my PC and when I took it in to repair, they told me that the hard drive was shot.  They did have a way to retrieve some of the data...that cost was going to be around $300.

I grinned and bared it.  I spent about 3 days trying to find other versions of files I may had emailed to someone or spent the day re-entering data (like my accounting).  Doing taxes later that year kind of sucked since TurboTax typically takes much of last years data to save me from re-doing steps 1 through (I don\'t know), about a billion.

That year, I thought I was getting smarter and honestly, there were not very many good pc backup software options online:   Uploading was slower and online drive space was more limiting and expensive.

My brilliant idea was to buy a big old external hard drive (it was 100 GB then, which was overwhelming at the time).  I bought some little utility that would back-up my computer nicely and it did a great job.

Until my three year old accidentally bumped it off the top of the computer onto the carpet.  This was a magnetic hard drive (more durable flash drives were still too expensive).  Again, another trip to the PC repair store and another quote for $300 to retrieve the data.

That pushed me to using Amazon\'s storage service called S3.  Personally, I love Amazon S3 for storing web data and using its Cloud to distribute large files (like videos) to people who use my site.  I also set it up to back up my computer.  It worked great and the third (yes, the THIRD!) hard drive that failed, the recovery was rather simple.  The problem?  Amazon S3 upload and download fees are pricy if you are doing a few Gigabytes per night back-up (close to $100/month in my case!)

I know I am babbling here, but I want to make a few key points:

  • Having an online PC Backup software resource is a MUST these days
  • Faster Internet and cheaper online drive space make this extremely affordable
  • It does not slow down your computer (most PC backup is done overnight)
  • Set-up is simple and once it is done, you don\'t think about it again.
  • Retrieval, in most cases, is simple too.

Recently, finding a better, more affordable file backup system has been a must for sustaining my business (and sanity).  I\'ve gone out and tried out a few.  This section focuses on the best PC Backup Software, their advantages and their drawbacks.
