For example, look at social media right now. Very few make much money at all. YouTube, MySpace, Facebook...All of these are worth BILLIONS of DOLLARS yet none of them make any substantial amount of profit. My point here is that there are TONS of tools and resources available online right now to do everything from creating a website or blog to tracking visitors to increasing conversion to even managing your help desk needs. I would say that almost HALF of the tools that I currently use are FREE. My blog at http://www.matthewbredel.com is a FREE Wordpress blog. I track all of my sites using free analytics tools such as StatCounter and Google Analytics. Discussion forums, help desks, classified ads listings...none of these require you to hire a designer or pay some large monthly fee to manage. Most of them are what we call "open source". This means that they have been developed by the programming community for anyone and everyone. People design these tools for notoriety, traffic back to their websites, or just because they enjoy doing it. Take advantage of this! Now, there is a catch to many of these! Many of these tools and features requires that you have your own server (hosting) and you have to be the one to install this. That's the bad news. The good news is that this is becoming easier and cheaper every day. Getting a server/hosting requires you to: 1) Pick out a domain (like http://www.yourwebsitename.com) - costs about $9-$15/year 2) Get a server account. These cost between $5-$20/month. A server is technically your "hard drive" on the internet. It is where you website lives. But you really don't need to know anything about a server to make this work. The installation: If you are technically savvy, you can probably set up most of these free applications yourself. This usually requires a Linux server, an FTP client, a MySQL database creation and some file editing. For those of you that I almost just caused you to leave the website, I apologize! That is just some techie stuff. For the computer layman, there are build in scripts that will do all of this with a simple click of a button. This a hosting company such as HostGator, you can install many of these applications using their Fantastic Delux script. I demonstrate how easy this is in my Wordpress Installation Video (#2) (if you join TheWebReviewer Club, I include more videos on managing and using HostGator as your server...it is TOO EASY!). So my point is there is no real reason why you cannot have a blog, a help desk, a forum, a website, etc. that costs no more than the cost for hosting (which is usually less than $10/month). Below are a list of the free applications I use on almost all of my websites. |
