Within a decade, the usage of the Internet has changed greatly. What used to be an isolated world of computer geeks has now become a versatile resource used by billions of people all over the world – geek or not.
So what's next? What do I foresee happening in the next few months or years?
Online Advertising and Affiliate Marketing
The traditional form of advertising is already starting to get lost amidst continuous technological development. Advertisers now have to redefine their concepts of media, influence, and audience reach.
The word-of-mouth, for example, has been one of the most effective advertising strategies in the past. It works through an informal exchange of positive and negative product information among consumers.
Viral marketing - the electronic version of word-of-mouth – is one of the most utilized advertising methods in the Internet these days. Call it word-of-mouse in the form of online forums, email tags, and informative articles about the product or service. Viral marketing is a highly-trusted form of advertising - its speed, efficiency, and affordability has won many heads and hearts.
However, advertisers should be in constant look-out for consequences that may arise when consumers turn against brands. With the amazing speed of the Internet, I can pretty much predict that such consumer-generated media can make or break a product.
More direct forms of Internet advertising like pay-per-clicks are taking bucks from the pockets of eager advertisers, but they're worth the pay. More and more companies are competing for top spot on keyword bids, that's why the pricing gets higher each day.
The latest buzzword, however, is Google's pay-per-action ads in which an advertiser only has to pay not for user clicks but for more specific and patronage-generating user actions such as signing up for a newsletter or purchasing the product.
With this, I foresee search engine companies to be gradually putting emphasis on the efficiency of the ads that they put into their pages rather than just relying on the revenue of pay-per-clicks which usually rattle a lot of people who would like to advertise online.
The pricing for a pay-per-action ad might be higher than that of pay-per-clicks, but at least it assures the advertiser of product or service usage as he pays the search engine company for the action done by the user. In a few months time, more and more advertisers might shift to pay-per-action strategies.
The coming years of online marketing will see a boom on video advertising. Compared to plain text or static images, videos are more effective creating product impression on users.
Some experts scrutinize the risk of facing affiliate marketing deals, but this does not stop the increasing number of business owners to venture into affiliate marketing. The world of online marketing is gradually setting standards or guidelines to help businessmen keep healthy affiliate marketing relationships.
Products and Services
Some experts predict a decline in the number of TV viewers in the future. I'd rather say that more people will be watching television in the future, but they'll be doing it in different ways. There might be a decrease in the number of people buying television sets, decoders, or standard video players because real-time video streaming, podcasting of videos, and file-sharing options can now come in handy on your desktop computer, laptop, or 3G mobile phone.
The remarkable popularity of iPod and other MP3 players has given rise to revenues for digital music sales. And now that Apple has released its fifth generation of iPod (it has 80GB of space, enough storage for 50 movies!), I'm sure there'll also be an increase in sales of digital video or movie files.
We are also at the brink of the emergence of 3D real-time online shopping. 3D online shopping hosts like
Oddcast allow prospect online buyers to talk to life-like avatars when purchasing a specific product over the Internet. This latest development will surely hit the market and enhance everyone's online shopping experience. We already saw the hype called virtual pets. Now, let's face the hype of virtual salespersons turning visitors into buyers.
So what's next? The future that lies ahead of you is open to a thousand or more technological innovations. They come and go, but you're always welcome to embrace the possibilities.
