And in most cases, it's free. So why not start a blog now? All you have to do is to follow the simple steps listed below, and with just a few clicks you'll be ready to write your thoughts in your blog.
- Sign up for a blogging account. If you do not have a website of your own, you can sign up for a blog account offered by numerous websites. Many sites like WordPress or Blogger allow you to set up a blog for free, though they might charge you for additional upgrades that can enhance your blog appearance or functionality.
Other blogging sites like TypePad charge you either monthly or annual membership fees. They provide advanced features which are not available in free blogging sites. If you want to test how these paid services work, you can register for 30 or 60 days of free trial.
- Identify your theme. What kind of blog do you want? Your blog can be an online personal diary where you can write your day-to-day experiences, private thoughts, or anything that interests you at the moment. Blogs with personal themes usually serve as a catharsis for most people.
You can also talk about one specific topic all throughout your blog. Say, if you are into motor sports, you can write everything about motor races in your blog– from the life of famous racers to the latest trend in motorbikes or safety tips in motor sports.
You may use a combo of both techniques – say, writing about motor races most of the time while injecting some personal insights about a different topic at other times. If you want to have a bandwagon of loyal readers, I think it is best that you talk more often about one particular topic throughout your blog.
If you're running a business, you can also use blogs to promote it. Actually, you can operate your business directly through blogs if you're not into creating your own website.
- Write your first entry. Okay, so you don't know what stuff to write. That's not a big issue. All you have to do is be yourself. Feel free to write about what's on your mind. Talk about things that you know a lot about.
If your blog is meant to discuss one specific topic only, keep it short yet informational. Don't give out everything about this particular topic in just one blog entry. You can talk more about it on your next entry but make sure to feed information regularly. Updating your blog daily will keep readers return to your site.
If you don't know how else to begin, why not write a “Welcome to My Blog” post? Consider this as your starting point - talk about yourself in general and those things that interest you. You can post more comprehensive discussions of your first post in your succeeding entries.
- Configure your blog's physical appearance. In your blog settings, you are given various options on how to make your blog appear the way you want it to. There are pre-made templates that you can choose from. All you have to do is pick a design and your blogging service will automatically configure your site.
If you cannot choose from among the available templates offered by your blogging service, there are online companies that sell pre-made templates and allow you to download them in your blog account. Also, if you know a lot about HTML and CSS coding, some blogging services allow you to customize your own site through HTML or CSS.
- Promote your blog. Start reading other people's blogs so you'll have an idea of what else to write in yours. Once you have posted a considerable amount of blog entries, you can start promoting your site. While you drop a comment or two on other people's blogs, you might as well give them the links to your own site and ask them to share their views and opinions by adding comments in your page. Some blog services include an option of automatically sending emails to your readers to notify them that you have updated your blog.
