EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SYDNEY JOHNSTON
*************************************
THEWEBREVIEWER: What has been one of the biggest challenges in your career and how have you overcome it?
SYDNEY: My biggest challenge is that I get bored easily so am always jumping from subject to subject. I work on one thing - get tired of it - jump to the next - get attracted to something else - etc., etc. I have had to learn some discipline and pay attention to small details (which isn't something I like - I like "the big picture"). That has definitely been my hardest lesson and I certainly am not perfect about it even now.
THEWEBREVIEWER: What words of advice would you have for a fellow homeschool mom or other busy, aspiring entreprenuer who can't seem to find the time to devote to her business?
SYDNEY: I have several ideas about that:
1. First, it's important to have a plan and to prioritize. If your time is very limited, then it only makes sense to work on those items that are most likely to accomplish your goal. Working on a new product, for example, would have priority over organizing your hard drive.
2. Make sure that you accomplish at least one thing, no matter how small, every day. This will give a feeling of accomplishment and you will see tangible progress, even though it's never as fast you wish it were.
3. Make a deal with yourself that NO MATTER WHAT you won't beat yourself up for what you didn't do! This is very important because feeling defeated or hopeless will build on itself. You're doing the best you can with your available time and you need to be your own best friend.
THEWEBREVIEWER: Where do you see your business heading in the future?
SYDNEY: No matter what's happening in the economy, there is always a way to prosper. We simply must be smarter about it. Example: on eBay the market for $200 designer handbags might be awful but other areas are booming. To save money, homeowners are canceling their yard services, their cleaning services, the guys who clean out the gutters. They're doing minor plumbing themselves, as well as repairs, painting, wallpapering and more. These folks needs tools, equipment, 'how-to' materials, instructional videos. So it's simply a matter of paying attention to the needs of our buyers and fulfilling them.
THEWEBREVIEWER: How has the economic recession affected your business?
SYDNEY: Our business is doing well, but it is definitely shifting. We are creating more products and those products are lower in price than they were formerly. It's always been important to research your market BEFORE the product creation but that's even more critical now.
