It's true that you can design a website without learning HTML. In the first place, we humans already have our own language, so why go through the fuss of learning codes that only computers can interpret?
Yes, you can always use HTML editors like the WYSIWYG software to automatically write HTML for web designs that you prefer - no need to pore over HTML online tutorials or thinking about what codes to put in, wondering if they will ever work. But there are many points why you should start getting down into HTML. Here they are:
- HTML editors, converters, and other automatic HTML tools can only do what they have been programmed to do, and they often make bad assumptions on your behalf. With your own knowledge about HTML, you can design a web page exactly the way you want it to. This means that you will have greater control over what your site should look like.
- Writing HTML from scratch is faster. HTML allows you to make changes in the Web page faster than someone who uses an HTML editor. If you need to fix an error in your website and you know how to do manual HTML coding, you can just go straight ahead and edit the codes. If you are using an editor, it wouldn't be that easy because you still have to download the file to the hard drive, open it on your editor, make changes, save the file, and upload it again on the server.
- By understanding HTML, you can decipher the codes used by other sites, thus you can learn design techniques from them. Viewing HTML codes for a particular website is easy. To do this, click on the “View” menu on top of your browser, then select “Source” or “Page Source” or “Document Source”. You may also right click on any area of the webpage that does not contain any text or images, and then select “View Source”. These steps might vary from one browser to another. If you have the knowledge of HTML, it will be easy for you to read and interpret the codes of other sites and apply the concepts in constructing your own site.
- Above all, learning how to write HTML is easy. HTML hand-coding is not as complicated as all other computer languages like C++ which uses the functionality of variables and loops. You can learn the basics of HTML in a matter of an hour or two, and after a couple of hours more you can probably finish creating a simple but complete website. With a bit of patience and dedication in understanding HTML, you can have sufficient understanding of how websites work in a week's time.
